What is the difference between SEO, SEM, SMM, and SMO?

These four abbreviations are used almost everywhere and always. So, their meaning is also important for everyone. Not for a long time ago I had no idea what SEO was, let alone others. Later I found out that I would never have visitors without SEO on my new website. If no one sees my website it automatically means that I have spent my time, money and energy on nothing. So, I decided to find detailed information on them.


SEO – Search Engine Optimization

“Improving a website’s presence in organic search engine result."

It seems like a very simple definition, but let us elaborate more on this. Basically, it is the process of improving the visibility of your website to your online audience via search engines. In other words, optimization methods which help improve your website’s ability to be listed on the first or second page of organic search results.


SEM - Search Engine Marketing

SEM is the marketing process of getting more visibility in the search engines.

Let us see how Google defines SEM.

Search engine marketing - The use of online advertising on search engine results in pages to help visitors find your website.

SEM often uses pay-per-click (PPC), a bidding model that charges advertisers only when someone clicks on their ad.

SEM involves paid advertisements such as Adwords, Bing ads, Yahoo and any other methods of online advertising. This process involves the creation of campaigns and measuring results.  


SMO – Social Media Optimization

SMO is an analogy of SEO but not in search engine but social media. It has its own rules and principles. 

Social media optimization attracts traffic, allows you to share content and create a society around your brand. 

The idea of SMO is to create your business pages in social media and share interesting content for a targeted audience. (Remember: you should have the possibility to share content on a website)


SMM – Social Media Marketing 

Social media marketing is useful for modern businesses. SMM can be more effective than SEO, at least in the beginning. 

Shortly, SMM is a plan that helps you to achieve success in your business with the help of social media. 

Social media marketing is created to enlarge a targeted audience, increase the trust and loyalty of a brand.

 As you can see from these definitions, they work in tandem. Every website marketing should have an SEO component. Without a solid SEO plan, your business website will most likely get lost and never show up on a page. 

Ask yourself, when you search, how deep do you go to find a business that you are going to contact. Most of us will never go past the first page of listings, so showing up on page one is important. A good SEO team can help improve your rankings by making your website more visible. It is definitely worth your marketing money to hire the experts and let them do what they are good and your success will be guaranteed. 

If I have such good SEO, why would I need to add SEM? As you can see from the definition, This process involves the creation of campaigns and measuring results. You set a budget and expect an immediate return on that investment. It is also the fastest way to get your website to show up on the first page of search engine results. 

SMO will definitely increase the visibility of your social media profile. It is a great way to network and meet potential customers. 

SMM aims to develop your business with the help of social media. Main accents are made on creating such content or a message that will push the audience to share it without much effort of the organizer. It is perceived that people trust social media more than on traditional advertisements. 

If you want to develop your business, you should broaden your internet-marketing base and also increase SEO and SMO strategies. Then decide which advertising strategy is for you – SEM or SMM or both. Good luck!
