What is aggressive marketing and how does it differ from classic marketing?

05. 07. 2023

Aggressive marketing differs from classical marketing in its goals. To cover the largest consumer audience, aggressive marketing uses any, sometimes even manipulative means and methods that are not used within the framework of classical marketing.

Aggressive marketing is not interested in establishing long-term relationships with customers, increasing their loyalty and expanding the customer base. The customer in this paradigm does not act as a long-term partner for relationships and repeat sales, but is perceived as a means of obtaining benefits in the short term and for a limited time.

That is why aggressive marketing uses methods such as:

  • Price dumping (selling products and services at artificially low prices);
  • Shock content;
  • Scandalous advertising;
  • 2=1 promotions, etc.

That is, methods that are usually avoided in classical marketing and whose main value is the use of a long-term strategy for working with the market and customers.

When is aggressive marketing appropriate?

At first glance, it may seem that the use of aggressive marketing is not advisable, but when a company is in a highly competitive environment and cannot achieve the necessary results through classical marketing methods due to various limitations, aggressive marketing is what it needs, because its methods can attract attention to the business, distinguish it from competitors, and quickly inform a large audience of consumers that the products and services offered by the company can solve their problems.

The term "aggressive marketing" can be perceived negatively, but it does not imply unambiguously negative actions and strategies; its correct implementation depends on the marketer's experience and ability to play between the provocative proposal and the permissible limit.

Of course, in this case, it is important not to go too far and in no case damage the company's reputation.

In marketing practice, there are examples of how companies built almost all their advertising activities on provocative messages, shocking the target audience and at the same time not suffering reputational damage, but, on the contrary, gaining greater recognition and popularity.

In order to stand out from competitors and attract customers, you need interesting ideas. During aggressive marketing, advertising should highlight the shortcomings of competitors and painful topics for customers. You need to convince the customer that the proposed product/service will solve their problem - and for this, immediate action is required from them.

Aggressive marketing can be used by any company:

  • To increase market share;
  • To sell back-ordered product;
  • To change consumer demand;
  • To increase sales;
  • To mitigate seasonal sales declines;
  • To launch a new product on the market.

Aggressive marketing attracts a mass audience, so it is best to use it to promote products and services in mass demand.
