Secrets of an effective team

28. 10. 2024

A team is an organized group of people united around a certain goal, with a specific goal in mind, working for a common cause. It differs from a group, which can be a mechanical unity of people and not have any content. Building a team is a rather difficult process, and managing it is even more difficult. The reason for this is that it consists of individual individuals who have a sharply individual psychology, ambitions, skills, forms of communication, etc. There are several theoretical models of team management, the discussion of which would take us far. In modern times, when the strict model has become a thing of the past and loyal approaches have been established within the team, active work has begun to identify problems and correct them (in the first model, the system is strict and aimed at limiting individuals, which cannot be a good way to achieve results in the long run).

In order for a team to work effectively, the following is important:

  • Listening

According to various studies, listening is one of the most important skills that any team should have. In a large team, it is natural to have different views, which should be listened to/understood with respect and rejected/accepted with arguments.

Criticism and even debate are vital for a team, but it is important that this be reasoned and within ethical frameworks. Otherwise, mutual hostility and aggression arise between members, which will initially lead to a tense atmosphere, and eventually to its collapse.

  • Empathy

Empathy is the ability of a person to understand and share the psychological state of other people. This is a very important human quality. We differ from each other in temperament, emotionality, and character, and therefore we must be able to understand each other.

Empathy usually gives the same result as a team that cares about each other. Employees with whom we spend about a third of our day deserve understanding. Empathy will help us communicate properly, which will simplify the work and avoid complications. Sometimes, as people, we are forced to close our eyes to the characteristics of a particular individual, no matter how unacceptable this may be. Remember, relationships are the art of compromise.

  • Support and progress

A “good team” is always oriented towards seeing opportunities for growth and development. The practice of sharing knowledge and experience is established among team members. They periodically evaluate the work done by the team, look for ways to learn, improve, and are not afraid of change.

When a supportive environment is created in the team, this will inevitably encourage open and honest communication, which in turn instills a culture of asking questions, dialogue, and feedback.

  • Belief

It is important for the team to believe in what it is doing, in its goals, in its success, in each other, and in itself. Trust between the administration and the team is a key issue. Doubts should not damage the unity of the team.

It is also important to consider that everyone should be ready for mistakes and failures, for overcoming which this point is important.

  • Free environment

The team should work in a free environment, each employee should have personal freedom (along with responsibilities). Pressure and steps taken to suppress individuals harm a free environment, without which critical thinking is very difficult. High receptivity and easing of rigidity are needed. A sense of humor and open relationships (including self-irony) play a large role in ensuring a free environment, which helps to alleviate hard work.

There are numerous studies that tell us that people working in a free environment, who enjoy trust and have defined deadlines, do their job more easily and pleasantly. The above is important for mental health and work efficiency. Freedom gives the team more independence and the ability to self-organize.
