Typography as a key part of design and communication

06. 03. 2023

Typography is an important factor in both design and communication in general.

Typography is an important part not only of communicating textual content, but it also shows the mood in which a particular message is conveyed.

For example, the fonts and styles used in movie titles give us a preview of the genre and content of the film.

Over the centuries, there have been a few fonts that have stood the test of time and proven to be some of the best ever created.

We don’t judge them by taste, as that is quite subjective and different for each of us.

But what are the biggest, most influential fonts from the last few centuries that have shaped the typography of graphic design today?

1. Helvetica

Undoubtedly one of the greatest and most beloved fonts ever created, Helvetica (or Neue Haas Grotesk) is a sans-serif typeface created in 1957 by designers Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann.

Today, it is the most commonly used typeface, both in logos and in various textual elements.

2. Garamond

Garamond is one of the oldest fonts still used in modern design and software, as it is based on the design of the 16th-century Parisian engraver Claude Garamond in the Old Roman script.

Today, it is one of the most commonly used fonts in book printing.

So, when you have to read a book in Latin script, you should know that it is most likely written in Garamond.

3. Futura

Another font that can be seen on various brands around the world is "Futura".

Futura is a geometric sans serif font designed by Paul Renner in 1927.

IKEA, Nike, Absolut Vodka, Gillette, Red Bull, Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Supreme, FedEx -

Yes, all of the companies listed use this font.

4. Bodoni

"Bodoni" is heavily influenced by the typeface of 18th-century businessman and designer John Baskerville.

The similarities between Baskerville and Bodoni fonts are found in the heavy contrasts that create a distinctive look.

It is much loved by magazine and newspaper designers for its decorative letters and elegance.

6. Arial

Arial is a sans-serif font that was created in 1982 by Robin Nicholas and Patricia Sanders.

Anyone who owns a Microsoft PC or Mac is probably familiar with this font, as it is used as the default font in their operating systems.
